L like well human beings Because to be brutally honest these characters were not believable people a lot f them just had A History of Prophecy in Israel, Revised and Enlarged one personality trope not really any nuance in thereLike Romeo himself who s supposed to be this closeted jock that has homophobic best friends and parents The author doesn t do anything to make his character compelling than that and also his shift from denial to acceptance was just way too rushed like everything in this book I ve personally been comfortable with my sexuality for a very long time but I did have a period where I was in denial and tried my best to be straight to crushn girls To no avail f
course but it took me years to get but it took me YEARS to get that place Toxic masculinity played a big part in that and this book had a lot f that too but it One, Two, Three Me only took Romeo a few days to change his perspective I m sorry but that s pretty unrealisticAnd the insta love just crushed me I know yeah a Romeo and Juliet retelling having insta love is normalr expected but I didn t find anything about this book to be even close to RJ besides the two boys names And honestly the insta love in this ne is just ridiculous They meet at a party exchange names and immediately kiss The second meeting they reintroduce themselves and then randomly start kissing AGAIN despite knowing absolutely nothing about each ther And the next thing you know they re already saying their I love you s even though they ve spent probably less than twenty four hours all together with each Sex and Lust in Tijuana: True Sex Stories of the Tjamigos other Romeo even straight up I kid you not asks Julian if he would MARRY him I was totally completely in shock Where was all this coming from Where was their chemistry Why did the author make their relationship skyrocket from zero to sixty real uick I m a sucker for gay romances mostf you who follow my reviews know this about me but even gay insta love is still insta love It doesn t make it any less cringe worthy r bizarrely unrealistic It just seemed like the author forced these two together and there was not much substance there between them if at allApparently there s another very short book that seems to recount Julian s point f view but I m not sure if that s supposed to be a seuel Tea for Ruby or companion book If it s the latter then I don t understand why the author didn t just merge these two books intone and did a double POV type The Life of Saint Philip Neri of thing I m not sure I d be interested to read it though if it s going to be as weird as thisne isI just wish the author took time to develop things flesh them ut let things breathe I hate being disappointed by an LGBT book because I appreciate the inclusion and the intent behind them and I WANT ueer representation especially in YA But sadly some f them are just not very good and this ne was ne I only Like the Fingers of the Guy I Hate, Vol. 1 of them I can t give the book an extra star for it being LGBT because that should just be a norm by now Making your book based around ueer themes shouldn t automatically award an extra star not in 20gayteen so I m going to judge this book based solelyn everything else about it and I just didn t like what I read Rating 2050The story about coming The Whistle Pig outf the closet I thought that this was a Romeo Juliet retelling story but ther than t really wish wholeheartedly that I could have adored this book it had the makings to be a fantastic re interpretation f Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Julian s journey could have been wonderful if not for the fact that it was too short This rendered the verall narrative to maintain a sort f superficial uality to it and by that I mean the characters the dialogue and unfortunately the story itself was too shallow and lacked any sort Church Planting Is for Wimps: How God Uses Messed-Up People to Plant Ordinary Churches That Do Extraordinary Things of depth It lacked meaning For instance Romeo s character was uite two dimensional he went from denial to acceptance extremely uick and I feel it may trivialise people swn experience with struggling with their A Stepdaughter In Heat own sexuality Also having to read Romeo s dialogue with his friends were excruciating notnly that the story was built upon generalisations and stereotypesIn terms f Romeo s relationship with Julian where did it come from I understand that the riginal Romeo and Juliet is not the greatest f healthy love portrayals considering the instant Himself than ever and leaves without even telling Julian his name With Rosie's support Romeo begins exploring his sexuality and ends up running into Julian again Realizing how little he knows about ther sexual rientations and gender identities Romeo begins to see the world in a whole new light and he and Juli. .
The good news is this book
is short The bad news is this book is short and The characters are not properlyshort The bad news is this book is short and The characters are not properly ut The scenes are not introduced nor detailed The transitions are missingI can tell the story the author meant to write Unfortunately this reads like an utline than a fully formed plot There isn t enough depth in anything here to make It Relatable A Few Scenes relatable A few scenes added purely for the shock value There is no romance There is abrupt insta love that makes no sense at all No chemistry There are various LGBT characters thrown in for inclusion yet they don t impact the story in any way Token bad parents that don t seem all that bad because the plot is not detailed enoughI just don t know what to say Even my review is coming ut as loose and pointless as the story I think it could be a decent plot But it would take another couple f hundred pages to really pull it together Review ARC received via NetGalley it s been some time since i read a romance let s just say the whole hassell business left with a bed taste in my mouth and an wariness f everything that just kept away from books in general for a few weeks when i saw romeo for real and its companion novel just julian Women and Social Work: Towards a Woman-Centered Practice on netgalley though i was cautiouslyptimistic a light romantic read seemed to be just what i neededbut romeo for real ended up being not uite the book i thought it would be it s very blatantly insta love which maybe i should have expected since you know romeo and juliet retelling and all but that s when the book lost me this aroace has very little to relate to r care about in insta love romances what really made me dislike this book though was the weird transphobic vibes woven into what was supposed to feel like a progressive pen minded story some examples a trans woman is the target The Cowboys of a transphobic attack just to establish a character as bad and her name isnly mentioned much later and she never stops being a non character non binary characters who are androgynous are referred as boygirl by the main character sometimes because they can t tell which gender they are and a party full Sins of Treachery of ueer people is portrayed as maybe boys maybe girls boys looking like girls etc in a very isn t this bizarre y all kindf wayi was thrilled when ace ppl were mentioned but honestly most ueer identities were portrayed as too weird to baby ueer gay i mean romeo and even ther aspects f gayness were seen by him and not debunked by anyone as too much in conclusion this book also left a bad taste My Grandfather's Prison: A Story of Death and Deceit in 1940s Kansas City on my mouth i have its companion but honestly not sure if it s worth the risk Normally I shelve books under LGBTIA if they fit that Thisne despite having gay characters did not At least not in my booksThe homophobia within this novel had me gritting my teeth and it was just such a cop ut to have the main character go along with it because f how he was raised with little to no substance supporting it I finished this but just barely It was too short too gross to be frank and downright insulting to an audience that at this point in time deserves a whole lot better SeriouslyReceived a free copy Whos Next? Guess Who! of this book in exchange for an honest review An ARCf this book was sent to me via NetGalley in exchange for an honest reviewMy first ne star rating in 2018 Hell my first ne star rating for any book in a long time really I used to enjoy giving Papi's Gift one star to books so I could rip them to shreds in a snarky GIF filled review but I m not that person any I haven t been that person in a long time So with that being said I take no joy in having to rate this so low but it does reflect mypinion I really didn t like this book At all I wish I did I wanted to going into it but I couldn t find any redeemable ualitiesI read this book in ne sitting because it s very short but that s the thing it s too short This is by far the thing that absolutely ruins this book for me that the author didn t take time to flesh ANYTHING ut It could ve been much better if they had taken the time to delve deeper into Romeo s inner turmoil as he struggles with his sexuality the toxicity Flash Fiction Forward: 80 Very Short Stories of his relationship with his parents and basically tried to make the characters fee. On the surface Romeo has it all successn the basketball court a group グライネリエ 1 [Grainerie 1] of friends and the beautiful Rosie Deep down he knows something is missing all he feels for Rosie is friendship Everything changes when he shares a kiss withpenly gay Julian at a party Despite their bvious attraction Romeo is less sure f. Ove but this fell into that same trope There was no chemistry no depth f romance nor character growth as they came together If the story and thus the characters had room to grow in that there was room for everything to be explored it may be a different story But unfortunately this book fails to immerse the reader with lacklustre characters dialogue and narrative Most f these reviewers are too hard The First Socialist Society: A History of the Soviet Union from Within on this book becausef its genre Your critiues are like complaining that a manual has too many instructions The Coming Revolution in Youth Ministry or a memoir focuses too muchn the subjectThis book comes from a series f novels written for youths who dont like reading It S Meant To Appeal To meant to appeal to by being short uick and easy to read to give them a story they can get through It s just something to get them reading instead f intimidating classics Wicked Sense or stories with multiple levels It s not meant for people who love reading and digging in to deeper meaningr a detailed story Is it cliche and cheesy Absolutely Did I read it ne night Yes Will I be digesting it for the next few days Definitely not But it has some important hints for LGBT2S youths that may normalize their experience in ways ther easy novels may not Though Rome is a stereotype closet gay I could relate to Rome s confusion discovering his attraction and desire for someone Powerless Against You of his gender and his panic about what that would mean to his friends and family I could relate to the dreadf having someone find ut before he was ready to share These are important topics youth need to see in their media even if they dont read good books I was really hoping this book would be somewhat enjoyable as I m such a big Romeo and Juliet fan However I had to abandon it around 25% I LOVE coming f age storiesYA but this was full f cliches stereotypes generalizations etc I understand that Rome ma I m glad I read Just Julian before this story r I may have been completely lost Although the couple is the same and the events are the same this story is told from Romeo s perspective and it s completely different from Julian s And yet the two stories together complement each ther Unfortunately the author does not indicate which book should be read first and in reality he probably should have simply combined both POV s and created ne bookI liked this story in large part I believe because I knew what was going created The Texan Meets His Match one bookI liked this story in large part I believe because I knew what was going happen already I also like Romeo s character at least I liked muchf his character and perspective in this book though I didn t care for his early participation in gay bashing I did however understand the peer pressure that led to itI think even Julian s mother was easier to understand when viewed from Rome s POV His wn parents were barely mentioned in Julian s book and were perfect examples f unlikeable persons in this ne The vice principal Mrs Duke was uite nasty to him in this story and yet was a friend f Julian s mother and an advocate for LBGT rights in that book in which she also had a larger role The friend base was a bit different and interactions among their friends included The Heretic's Handbook (Kindle Single) on those secondary characters in this story But like thether book I found it Blue Guide New York odd that there was so much diversity in that high school especially given the homophobic bullying and the parents attitudesAll in all I would recommend that if someone wants to read this they should read Just Julian first as I believe the perspective is in better balance reading that before thisne But neither book is ne I d highly recommend to my friends in general But those who enjoy YA stories might like this look at a little slice f life in this small townARC provided by the publisher through Net Galley in exchange for an impartial review This wasnot a good book It was light Monsieur de Saint-George: Virtuoso, Swordsman, Revolutionary: A Legendary Life Rediscovered on plot lightn character development and heavy n instant love It felt like a here s a half formed story I m using
to teach you than like an actual novel It also was writtenteach you than like an actual novel It also was written a cringe y verly enthusiastic way And there were some really transphobic vibes despite being a seemingly progressive novel I respect what the author was trying to do here but this just really really didn t work for me Received from NetGalley in exchange for review.
